Red Hat Senior Software Maintenance Engineer in Durham, North Carolina

The Red Hat Sustaining Engineering (SE) team is looking for a Senior Software Maintenance Engineer to help lead a new team aimed at delivering stable RHEL kernel releases. These kernels are a critical component for our enterprise class customers as well as all RHEL customers. You will work closely with RHEL kernel engineering to deliver extended product maintenance work, including handling defects, bugs, and CVEs in the extended life streams of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). You'll be actively leading all aspects of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) maintenance; development, quality engineering, documentation, engaging with stakeholders, etc.. You will co-lead our patch review process, the development and execution of backports and test plans, and the creation of automation tools to improve the efficiency, flexibility, and quality of Red Hat’s delivery to customers.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need to have the ability to think creatively and adapt to rapid change, as well as an eagerness to learn new things, and to innovate for process and quality efficiency. Ability to work Hybrid from one of our offices (Boston MA, Lowell MA, Raleigh NC, Durham NC).

Requirements

  • Expert level C coding skills

  • Extensive experience handling revisions and conflicts on Git.

  • Familiar with backporting patches, including straight cherry picks, functionally equivalent backports, dependency resolution, etc.

  • Familiar with git concepts such as the merge request workflow, etc.

  • Familiar with kernel internals, including but not limited to:

  • Maintainership workflow

  • Device drivers

  • Boot process

  • Experience with userspace low-level internals, including but not limited to:

  • Processes

  • Interprocess communication mechanisms

  • Kernel interface (syscalls, ioctl, etc.)

  • Experience with building code from source and debug compilation failures

  • Experience with tools like Make and autotools.

  • Experience with debugging and testing low-level code:

  • Experience with tools such as crash, ftrace, and gdb.

  • Experience debugging test failures and filing issues.

  • Familiar with automated testing environments:

  • Jenkins jobs, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions.

  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, critical thinking, and communication skills

  • Demonstrated experience of collaborative problem solving

Desirable

  • Open Source contributions to upstream linux projects or interaction with the open source community.

  • Experience developing for kernel subsystems (such as networking, device drivers, etc).

  • Experience with other debugging tools like perf, eBPF and system tap.

  • Experience with unit and integration testing.

  • Experience with scripting languages like Python and/or Bash.

  • Experience with container-driven solutions.

The salary range for this position is $96,480.00 - $154,330.00. Actual offer will be based on your qualifications.

Pay Transparency

Red Hat determines compensation based on several factors including but not limited to job location, experience, applicable skills and training, external market value, and internal pay equity. Annual salary is one component of Red Hat’s compensation package. This position may also be eligible for bonus, commission, and/or equity. For positions with Remote-US locations, the actual salary range for the position may differ based on location but will be commensurate with job duties and relevant work experience.
