The Red Hat Open Innovation Labs (Labs) team is looking for a Senior System Administrator to join our Global Labs team in Raleigh, NC. In this role, you will ensure the availability of critical services and provide support to Red Hat’s engineers, using some of the best tools and procedures on the market. You’ll work in a dynamic environment, focusing mainly on technical leadership. You’ll mentor and develop the junior Raleigh Labs associates’ capabilities and help the North America (NA) teams meet their weekly ticket-handling service-level agreement (SLA) objectives. As a Senior System Administrator, you will work in the Engineering team’s fastest-growing datacenter environment, maintaining our hardware loan program known as DSAL and assisting with migrations and support of systems and services that the Products and Technologies (PNT) Labs team provides for the Engineering team. You’ll get an opportunity to collaborate with a successful Global Labs team to help architect, deploy, and support the applications and lab infrastructure that allows our Engineering team to produce excellent open source software.

Primary job responsibilities

  • Lead weekly team meetings, assign tickets, and ensure that ticket SLA targets are met

  • Train and mentor junior associates, helping to develop their technical skills within their roles

  • Lead monthly maintenance events across NA and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) lab regions

  • Work with DSAL hardware loan team to implement automation and new process improvements

  • Support and implement documentation best practices for the team

  • Conduct technical training sessions for junior associates

  • Coordinate with project management on data center migrations, projects, and lab expansions

  • Promote customer service best practices within the team

Required skills

  • 5+ years of Unix or Linux system administration experience; Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) certification is a big plus

  • Linux operating system installation, configuration, upgrade, and maintenance experience

  • Networking technology at the physical (twisted pair, fiber optic) and logical (Ethernet, TCP/IP) level, including various supporting services and protocols (DNS, DHCP, LDAP, Kerberos, etc.)

  • Familiarity with various types of industry hardware (Intel 64, AMD64, EM64T, IA64, S390/S390x, PowerPC, etc.)

  • Experience managing Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) systems

  • Initiative and passion for technology; proven team leadership skills and outstanding customer service skills

  • Motivated to deliver exceptional results with minimal oversight

  • Good judgment and negotiation skills; ability to find successful resolutions for complex issues, escalating those that require management involvement when necessary

  • Experience with administration of other operating systems like Solaris, Windows, AIX, or HP/UX

  • Experience managing applications and systems written in Perl, Python, Ruby, and PHP

  • Ability to write scripts in shell, Python, and Perl

  • Experience with configuration management tools like CFEngine, Puppet, and Red Hat Ansible Automation

  • Familiarity with the configuration of ethernet and storage switching

  • Experience using Cisco (IOS, CatOS, SANOS, NX-OS), Brocade, and qLogic

  • Experience using storage technologies like NetApp, IBM DS, and EMC

  • Netapp and EMC experience; EqualLogic or HP Storage are a plus

  • Close familiarity with SAN best practices

  • End-to-end experience with storage technologies

  • Understanding of virtualization technologies like Xen or KVM, Red Hat Virtualization, or VMware

  • Ability to quickly achieve deep understanding of complex applications

  • Experience using RPM and yam for software deployment

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision

  • Ability to speak business-level English; ability to read and interpret technical documents in English

  • Understanding of other languages like C, C++, or Java is a plus
