RedHat Senior Software Engineer - RHEL Virtualization (real-time) in Remote, Ontario
The Red Hat Engineering team is looking for a Senior Software Engineer with kernel development experience to join our team. In this role, you will work as part of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) Virtualization team. You’ll help this distributed, global team develop and maintain Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), a core technology of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
Primary job responsibilities
Resolve latency violations and complex kernel issues affecting KVM virtual machines and containers running real-time workloads
Perform latency analysis of KVM virtual machines and containers running real-time workloads
Backport Linux kernel features and bug fixes from latest Linux kernel into older kernels
Work with the Linux kernel upstream community on getting changes integrated into Linux mainline
Assist multidisciplinary team of engineers working on cloud management software like Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Kubernetes on how to debug and implement real-time support
Assist the Quality Engineering (QE) team in creating test cases and reproducing issues
Proven 4-7 years of Linux kernel development experience
Solid Linux kernel debugging skills
Proven familiarity with Linux kernel development tools like Git, make, GCC, etc.
Good programming skills in Bash or Python
Ability to work with little supervision
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
The following are considered a plus
Experience using kernel tracing or eBPF
Basic understanding of core Linux kernel subsystems like the scheduler, memory management, and locking
Good understanding of the Linux virtualization software technologies like KVM, QEMU, and libvirt
Familiarity with the Linux kernel community and open source development model
Familiarity with RPM-based Linux distributions like Fedora
Familiarity with real-time systems; familiarity with the PREEMPT_RT patchset is a big plus
Basic understanding of Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Kubernetes
